Frikyiwa Collection, Vol. 1 was put together by French musician/producer Fr d ric Galliano, offering various club DJs and remixers the opportunity to recontextualize the music of Mali for the dancefloors of the future. Drawing from the stable of recordings owned by the Cobalt Records label, the remixers chose works by original artists such as Nahawa Doumbia, Ibrahim Hamma Dicko, Neba Solo, Lobi Traor , and Abdoulaye Diabate. Jazz, reggae, dub, trance, house, drum"n"bass, and trip-hop all pop up over the course of the compilation, but the Malian sensibility helps tie everything together -- even if purists might cringe at the very concept. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
