Bhangra has come a long way from its origins as a traditional harvest dance in the Punjabi speaking regions of India and Pakistan. A staple of Indian movies for many years (no film was complete without at least one frantic bhangra dance scene) the genre really came into its own when the influences of the urban music scene were taken on board. It now has desi beats, music taken from the traditional Punjabi culture but mixed, beefed- up with bass and heavy doses of R&B, Ragga or Rap to give it an urban and contemporary relevance that appeals to a new young audience that now extends throughout the world.
