In his native Estonia G J Helbemae kept a bewildering variety of pets, from white mice to leeches, but the occupation of his county by the Soviet Red Army in 1944, and his subsequent exile in England, meant that it was many years before his thoughts again turned to the animal he admired most - the squirrel.
