Like many pianists of her generation, Dame Myra Hess was a performer rather than a recorder. She simply shined in front of an audience, singing out Chopin"s F Minor Fantasy in rolling, assertive paragraphs, and delivering a carefully selected Schubert Dance set with twinkling generosity. Her Schubert B Flat Opus Posthumous Sonata is more congenial than searching, yet always singing, and without the strain of her BBC version recorded a decade later. --Jed Distler
