From Slovenia to Switzerland to New York City Silvester Lango was born in Italy of Slovenian parents on both sides. He weaves a colorful story of his life that started out in the town of Deskie in the area that was being fought over by the Austrians during World War I. It is the same locale that inspired Ernest Hemingway to write his famous novel, ”A Farewell to Arms.” As Langos’ ancestors did before him, he too survived the emotional stress and economic struggle brought about by the ravages of war-torn Europe. In his youth, he finally won a scholarship for medical school in Slovenia which, at that time, was under Yugoslavian rule. When he said “no” to their Communist propaganda and refused their scholarship money, he nearly starved as he tried to continue his studies on his own. By working summers in a German factory, he was able to earn enough to graduate. He began his residency in Switzerland, but he saw more of a future as a surgeon in America. In 1972, he and his wife and three small children migrated to the US. He finished his residency in hospitals in New York and Philadelphia and, at last, became a full-fledged orthopedist. With an office in New York City and a home by the sea in Westchester, he lives a contented, joyful and productive life. He loves and enjoys his patients from all over the world, as well as his many international friends. In this book, he shares his stories, anecdotes and remembrances, but most of all, his great knowledge and historical interest in an unexpected montage of subjects.
