The Holy Bible: King James Version / The Pennyroyal Caxton Bible
Price 65.00 USD
The Holy Bible is the magnum opus of Barry Moser"s career. In a creative effort of titanic proportions, he has devoted the last four years to this project, designing and setting the type and painstakingly carving the engravings for this King James version of the Bible. It will be the only twentieth century Bible with original illustrations by one artist for every book of the Old and New Testaments. (The last time this feat was accomplished was in 1865 by Gustave Dore.) Initially, it was conceived to be an elite handmade letterpress edition for a select group of book collectors to be published by the Pennyroyal Caxton Press. Created under the patronage of mogul Bruce Kovner, and named for his Caxton Corporation (in additional to Moser"s Pennyroyal Press), The Holy Bible is a labor of love for both the Bible and the art of bookmaking -- the Bible being a kind of Everest for printers. Only 400 copies of the limited edition will be printed at a price tag of $10,000 a piece. However, Viking Studio is privileged to be participating in this once-in-a-century event by publishing the trade edition of this masterpiece. To many, the Bible is still the greatest story ever told, while The King James Version has been termed, "the noblest monument of English prose." The Moser Bible, a great art book, is also first and foremost a reading Bible. The utmost care has been taken in the placement of every word and each page of text has been lovingly designed and set. Modeled on ordinary people, the illustrations are haunting, sometimes dark, but always numinous. The art gives us a context, for what we are reading, and leave us with an indelible image for many of the Bible"s most famous scenes: Jonah andthe Whale, Leviathan, The Harlot, The Last Judgment, The Annunciation. The Viking Studio edition holds to Moser"s vision of quality by publishing to the highest standards. The Holy Bible will appeal to any connoisseur of great art, for admirers and collectors of fine bookmaking, and to anyone wishing to, finally, possess a version of the Bible that does justice to its role as the most revered sacred text of our time.
