As a teenager in rural New England, I began a project of taking a photograph of a wildflower-filled meadow at the same time every day for a year and collecting the photos and my Thoreauvian musings into a book. The goal was to capture the changing colors, bloomings, seedings, and decaying of the plants and the lighting peculiar to each day of each season. But being a teenager, I was diverted by other schemes and dreams, and I have often regretted that I did not follow through (although I later did publish academic research on the evolution of flowering time). Happily, the Barbours have followed through where this teenager did not: they have captured the changing landscape of New England meadow and forest plants through a year and enriched it with their thoughtful observations of the changing seasons. For anyone who loves to watch natural plant communities change through the year--whether the meadow next to your barn or the ever-changing plant communities of the median strip of the interstate you drive each day to work--this book is a delight. Recommended.
