In his scornful opening remarks about English critics of Wales the author dismisses the pompous and ignorant and their "unmelodious and even disgusting" attempts at uttering Welsh, as well as the obsessive lovers of the Celt who recite Ossian "with great emotion and less effect." He then proceeds to describe the Wales he knew.
