Until 1991 Ukraine was the largest nation in the world without independence. A fertile country rich in natural resources, it had long been fought over by neighboring Poles, Germans, Russians, and Romanians. Previous attempts for independence had been brutally crushed, and between 1930 and 1940 over a quarter of the population was killed as a result of famine, mass execution, and war.
