Is God good? Is there ever more? What"s the point? Dr. Chip Dodd refers to these as questions of the heart in his new book, "The Voice of the Heart: A Call to Full Living" (Sage Hill Resources, a division of Providence Publishing Corporation). Dodd encourages people to examine these questions instead of numbing their hearts with neglect. A full life is beyond our grasp without knowing the eight feelings that are stamped upon our hearts - hurt, loneliness, sadness, anger, fear, shame, guilt, and gladness. For many of us, life is only about survival. Sadly, we live lives of self-protection. We close doors to anything that might lead to hurt or disappointment, only to also shut out our hearts to relationship and all that is joyous and full. Profoundly insightful, The Voice of the Heart offers us a deeper understanding of how to live an abundant life. Chip Dodd teaches us how to begin to know our hearts so that we better know ourselves and are better equipped to live in relationship with others and, ultimately, with God. "This book is an invitation to rediscovery," Dodd says. "It helps you to find what you lost and reawaken what is asleep. It will hopefully be a tool to help you knock down the walls around your heart." Dodd believes that the awakening of the heart leads to an abundant life. Dodd has spent the past several years developing and teaching the "Spiritual Root System," a metaphor explaining the life of the heart. The system"s five roots are feelings, needs, desires, longings, and hope. "The Voice of the Heart" explains all five roots, but the book"s emphasis is feelings. "You and I have only eight feelings," Dodd says. "We cannot live in fullness without knowing these feelings. The paradox is that if we choose fullness with our feelings, we also choose to experience pain." Yes No * 7 of 8 people found the following review helpful GREAT BOOK By K. Russell on January 10, 2004 Format: Hardcover I just wanted to quickly respond to a previous review of this book. If there is such a thing truth, then that "truth" is unalterable. The reviewer writes, " The Voice of the Heart is not for Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, Taoists, Mystics or any other group that may hold to a different view of how the Universe is "put together" and how it works. Therefore, it cannot be the vessel containing the "unalterable truth" that the author proclaims. It seems to me that this particular viewer has a skewed view of what truth is, since if it doesn"t agree with every other religious point of view, according to the reviewer, then it is thus does not contain `unalterable truths". Does it follow that any viewpoint that doesn"t agree with all other viewpoints is thus not truth? This book is a fantastic introduction into the nature of the heart, and I highly recommend it for anyone curious and seeking. Comment Was this review helpful to you? By Beth Dempsey on September 3, 2002 Format: Hardcover To say that this book has changed my life is such an understatement. The truth revealed in it has allowed me to discover my heart and speak from it. At first I had to look at the list of impaired emotions so that I could find out what I really was really feeling. Once I learned to be honest about those feelings with myself, then to God, and then others, I experienced a freedom that was truly life changing. I now know how to live in fullness and not impairment. Thanks, Chip, for writing this book and revealing such truth.
