Based on the life of Carlos, Prince of Asturias, Verdi"s Don Carlo premiered at the Salle Le Peletier (Paris Opera) on March 11th, 1867. The libretto was originally in French, and in that form it is known as Don Carlos. Due to heavy revisions made over the years following its premiere, there are more versions of Don Carlo than of any other Verdi opera. The version presented in this edition is Verdi"s final revision--usually known as the 1883 revision, it premiered in January 1884 and consists of four acts. The text of this edition is in Italian. Like all Polonius editions, this score is printed on smooth, heavy, cream-colored paper.
