Written from the point of view of early 1960"s America. Frank Tannenbaum (1893-1969) was an Austrian-American historian, sociologist and criminologist. He was an early proponent of labeling theory which is a theory of how the self-identity and behavior of individuals may be determined or influenced by the terms used to describe or classify them. It is associated with the concepts of self-fulfilling prophecy and stereotyping. Labeling theory holds that deviance is not inherent to an act, but instead focuses on the tendency of majorities to negatively label minorities or those seen as deviant from standard cultural norms. The theory was prominent during the 1960s and 1970s, and some modified versions of the theory have developed and are still currently popular. The contents include:Chapter 1 - The Land and the People; Chapter 2 - Race; Chapter 3 - Religion; Chapter 4 - Regionalism; Chapter 5 - The Hacienda; Chapter 6 - Education; Chapter 7 - Leadership; Chapter 8 - Politics; Chapter 9 - The United States and Latin America; Chapter 10 - Castro and Social Change.
