Broadside ballads were everyday musical fare. Whistled and hummed in all walks of life, they were as likely to be bought for domestic amusement as pinned up on a tavern wall. The songs on this recording served another purpose: to complement a lewd scene in a theatre, to cozen a market-place gathering, or "stir up unchaste thoughts" in taverns and bawdy-houses.
