Poetica 1 Meleager of Gadara (c. 140-70 B.C.) was the last and most inventive of the Hellenistic epigrammatists. He was also the editor of the `Garland", a collection of poems which is the basis of our `Greek Anthology". No poet wrote more lyrically, with such mastery of every mode of Greek epigram - especially the love-poem. In his air of playful experiment and his rehandling of traditional material, he anticipates Catullus, the Roman lyric poet with whom he has much in common. Peter Whigham - poet and translator of Catullus - has made delightful versions of Meleager"s best poems. An unusual feature of this edition - the first selection of Meleager"s work for many years - is the inclusion both of the Greek texts and plain prose translations, enabling the reader to study the relationship between the originals and their modern poetic counterparts. The Introduction, prose translations and notes are by Peter Jay, whose edition of `The Greek Anthology" in translation was published in 1973.
