Introducing a way to recycle ALL your food and plant waste in a safe and effective way- with Bokashi. Bokashi is a Japanese term for "fermented". We ferment the organic matter to produce a type of compost that helps build healthy soil and grow nutrient- rich foods. We use EM•1® in the fermentation process because it is teaming with with live microbes, enzymes, trace minerals, and vitamins that help other beneficial life grow. Why use food waste to make Bokashi? Food wastes are typically disposed of as garbage. 40-60% of landfill space is food waste. Food Waste is wet and contains lots of nutrients, so it starts to rot quickly and produce odors and attracts pests. Fermenting, or preserving, prevents the rotting process. Fermented Bokashi acts as a fertilizer or compost. What types of food can be used in Bokashi? All leftovers, vegeta- ble peels, egg shells, coffee grinds, tea bags, pizza crusts, meats, dairy, pasta and pastries can go into the Bokashi buckets. How? It"s simple: 1-2 weeks to fill the bucket. Then 2 weeks in the bucket. Then 2 weeks in the ground.1-2 Weeks to Fill: Add food waste to the bucket, sprinkling EM•1® Bokashi bran on each layer. Continue adding layers until the bucket is full (this may take an average family about 1 week to fill).2 Weeks in the Bucket: Once the bucket is full, close the container and let the food wastes pickle for 1 to 2 weeks.2 Weeks in the Ground: Buery in the ground (cover with 6-8 inches of soil), feed to worms, or add to a compost pile.
