If the era of cheap oil is over (and there is strong evidence that it is) there are multiple reasons for designing and building unconventional transit. Some reasons are: Diversifying transportation is necessary as oil becomes scarce. Resource limitations and the price of gasoline will force commuters to make other transit choices, but we are unprepared for that eventuality. The global economy is completely dependent on the idea of unlimited economic growth on a finite planet.
