During World War II, continuous changes in the naval tactics, new combat methods of the Allies, often forced the U-boats of the German navy to perform more concealed approaches and faster escapes or deeper submersions. Further development of the type VIIC submarine allowed her to submerge as deep as 300 m. This was thanks to the change of the pressure hull design. External changes to the shape included the new stem of oblong shape and more marked side kink which allowed lesser overflow of the deck by waves. Construction of the new type VIIC/41 vessel took about 250,000 man-hours. The U-1064 was built by Krupp Germaniawerft at Kiel, shipyard no. 701. Launched on 22 June 1944, she was commissioned on 29 July 1944, allocated to 5 Submarine Flotilla. By January 1945 she performed training cruises. In 1945 transferred to 11 Submarine Flotilla under Captain Herman Schneidewind. The ship surrendered on 29 May 1945 at Trondheim.
