Popular fairy-tale themes provide the basis for this integrated curriculum activity book and its companion tape. "Little Red Riding Hood", "The Three Little Pigs", "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" and other traditional children"s stories are extended with group and individual experiences in drama, literature, writing, art, science, games, cooking, music and mathematics. Each fairy-tale theme includes directions for a variety of open-ended, developmentally appropriate activities for children in grades PreK-1. A paper bag theatre with stick puppets, a mud pie factory, feather paintings and huff "n" puff cake are just some of the projects teachers will find here. Also included are patterns and instructions for "simpletees", instant costumes that any teacher can make from extra-large T-shirts, a hot glue gun and a few odds and ends. They are easy for children to pull on over their clothing, requiring little or no help from the teacher. The basic costumes can be used repeatedly throughout the year for different stories. "Story Play Music", an audiocassette, has been produced to accompany the fairy-tale themes in the book and provides a background to the activities. Through the music children can experience the sounds and sensations of tiptoeing through a jungle, painting with a feather or climbing a magic beanstalk. The tape is designed for the busy teacher"s convenience - story titles are announced before each experience and the tape requires little or no rewinding. Appropriate for small groups, individuals and learning centres, the activities in the book should provide teachers with many practical and enjoyable ideas to enhance the learning experiences of young children.
