This work details the historical development of the ceramic precusors concept. It presents up-to-date information on ceramic precursor technologies and their numerous applications, covering metal nitrides, carbides, phosphides and aresnides, as well as sol-gel and inorganic polymer-processed metal oxides. The specific structure of advanced materials is discussed, and classical and ceramic-precursor methods of ceramic preparation are covered.
