A World of Silence: Living with HIV in Matabeland, Zimbabwe
Reports the results of a longitudinal, qualitative study of the needs and coping strategies of people living with HIV. The experiences of the 72 seropositive girls, women and men who participated in this study over several years are recounted and analyzed in the context of Zimbabwe"s socio-economic and cultural background, and related to the reaction of this society to the growing threat of HIV. The reader begins to understand the interaction between HIV and traditional health beliefs, the changing role of the extended family, and expectations and customs with regards to marriage and non-marital relationships. Recommendations encompass AIDS prevention, as well as care and support for people living with HIV. (Thesis)
