Toledo Cathedral was the highest-ranking church in 16th-century Spain and one of the grandest in all Europe. The English choir Polyhymnia examines here the Cathedral"s musical legacy, presenting first recordings of works from its archives. Lobo"s light and serene Missa Beata Dei genitrix has none of the anguished minor-key intensity often associated with Spanish sacred music; the hymns and canticles by Morales and Torrentes alternate smooth Palestrina-style polyphony with plainchant. Most choirs rush perfunctorily through the chant portions of such works; Polyhymnia sings them slowly and metrically, integrating chant with polyphony and letting the hymns sound hymn-like. The Winchester boys are shaky in their brief contributions, but Polyhymnia"s reverent singing (some rough-and-ready blend notwithstanding) is quite satisfying. Lots of discoveries here for Spanish Renaissance lovers. --Matthew Westphal
