Lyndon B. Johnson was born in Texas in the early 1900s. When he grew up, he became a teacher in a poor area. He entered politics to work for citizens like his students who needed help. Johnson represented Texas in the United States Congress for 24 years before becoming Vice President of the United States. When President John F. Kennedy was killed in 1963, Johnson became president. While in office, he worked to help poor Americans. But he also led the nation into a controversial war.
