Following the election of Burundi"s first Hutu president, elements of the country"s army lead a bloody coup attempt in October 1993. The ensuing massacre led to over 50,000 dead, while thousands of refugees fled the country. This is a report on the current power vacuum which exists following the attempted coup. The author aims to alert the international community to the dangers of further violence unless reconciliation can be brought about. He details recommendations for immediate peace actions.
