This work on women and education in Scotland questions popular beliefs about Scottish education, with its focus on such male stereotypes as the "lad o" pairts", the honours graduate and the dominie. It examines gender bias in contemporary schooling and demonstrates the historical basis for it, both in power relations and in the ways in which they are often explained. Containing both historical and contemporary papers, the contributions look at the meaning of schooling for teachers and pupils, examining their personal experiences and the structures which have shaped them.
