The Snakes of Sri Lanka: A Coloured Atlas, authored by Sri Lanka"s leading herpetologist Anslem de Silva, consists of five chapters: Chapter 1 - Introduction to snakes of Sri Lanka lists the most updated (up to May 2009) Provisional Checklist of Snakes of Sri Lanka. It also includes accounts on the venomous snakes and epidemiological aspects of snakebite in the country. Sri Lanka"s snake fauna is diverse and ecologically associated with a wide range of habitats, from coastal waters surrounding the island, inland waters, all climatic and vegetation zones from sea level up to the highest plains (Horton Plains) at 2,200 m above sea level. This is the first time an effort of this magnitude have been attempted in the Asian region and is a valuable reference work as well as a RARE collector"s item.
