A Hundred Verses from Old Japan was originally collected in the thirteenth century. One of the most popular anthologies of Japanese classical poetry, this collection comprises love poems and "picture poems" describing scenes from nature in tanka form, thumbnail sketches compressed into thirty-one syllables.
