Maggie, intense and sensitive, dearly loves her more prosaic brother, but he finds it difficult to understand her. Trapped in a world that she can neither adapt to nor escape from, Maggie"s predicament is tragic indeed. There is also, however, much humour, with such comical characters as Mrs Tulliver"s sisters, the redoubtable Mrs Glegg and the melancholic Mrs Pullet.
