Spatial Audio Displays for Military Aviation: A Special Issue of the international Journal of Aviation Psychology (International Journal of Aviation Psychology, Vol 14, Number 3 2004)

EAN/UPC/ISBN Code 9780805895285

The purpose of this special issue is to bring together some of the outstanding recent work on spatial audio displays for military aviation into a single volume. It also provides the designers of cockpit and other aviation displays with an awareness of the research being conducted and the potential for spatial audio displays to improve performance, reduce workload, and enhance situation awareness, as well as to convey an idea of its technological maturity and its readiness for transition into the real-world systems. All of the papers in this issue make an important contribution to the literature on the human factors of spatial audio displays. The first paper addresses the application of spatial audio technology to auditory warnings, demonstrating a significant reduction in reaction times to spatialized warnings when used in conjunction with visual display. The next article discusses the use of spatial audio to enhance the performance of other flight tasks. Next, flight simulation experiment designed to investigate the use of spatial audio to improve target acquisition performance in conjunction with a head-down visual display is addressed. The fourth article represents research conducted in an AFRL flight simulator. Finally, the special issue wraps up with a discussion of the factors that lead to differences in speech intelligibility in spatial intercoms.
