The control, supervision and governance of social security systems is an issue of extreme topicality in Central and East European countries. Faced with the dire social consequences of the economic transition, with unemployment and poverty on the upsurge, the only means to alleviate hardship is through well-functioning social protection systems. But while the reform and adaptation of benefit packages, legal frameworks and financing systems have received considerable attention during the past three years, the questions of administration, management and governance of the new independent schemes have not. This leaves a crucial void in the reform process. This volume addresses the specific problems of social protection reforms in Central and Eastern Europe, and is designed to help hose who shape future social policies in the region to formulate their ideas.
