"One night after they finished playing somewhere else, Joe and Rick Aaron came in to Caroline"s. Rick said that his dad hadn"t played a regular jazz club gig for about thirty years and that he would like to sit in. (Joe is always playing somewhere, but not a nightclub gig.) It only took playing a couple of tunes with Joe and Rick together, and I realized they were a world class combination. Before they left the club that night, I asked them if they would do a couple of performances with us. They agreed, and it was after we played together on Joe"s 82nd birthday that I came up with the idea of Rick and Joe doing a live recording with us. I did not know then that this would be a first - that Rick and Joe had never recorded together, live or otherwise. We decided to record live on a Sunday at Caroline"s.
