The Leo Baeck Institute was founded in 1955 by the Council of Jews from Germany for the purpose of collecting material on and sponsoring research into the history of the Jewish community in Germany and other German-speaking countries. The Institute is named in honour of the man who was the last representative figure of German Jewry during the Nazi period. This volume contains essays on crucial issues of emancipation and oppression and special sections on Franz Rosenzweig and Alexander Altmann.
