One day, four continents, thirty-six recordists. Jason Reinier and his confederates in sound offer us an engaging tour through the familiar, recorded from midnight to midnight a single day. It’s a 24-hour sonic portrait of Everyday: soundings from nearby nature, the home, the streets, and public spaces. What we hear in Day of Sound are personal explorations that give a taste of what any of us might discover if we turned ears or mics toward our daily lives. This disc is the first major release to highlight work from the humble and talented global networks of phonographers. The purpose here is clearly not to recreate some mythic (and often illusory) "primal soundscape," nor to restructure and bend the original experience into something that may be deemed “art.” The intention and process behind Day of Sound are far more straightforward. Yet thanks to the curiosity of the recordists and the integrative ears of producer Jason Reinier, the result is far from mundane. This sound journey through a day and around the planet moves with supple grace from the easily recognizable (clock chimes, morning birds, overheard phone conversations) to the mysterious, moments when our ears perk up with questions. And, there are a few intriguing segments that explore human creativity with sound! , including a lone singer in a tunnel and a wave organ that is eternally pumped by the surging surf. That so a straightforward approach should yield such poetic results speaks well of both those involved, and of the rich tapestry of sound that is the voice of our planet.
