A brilliant collection of recent works created by Mario Martinez, aka MARS-1, for his second solo exhibition at New York"s Jonathan Levine Gallery early in 2009. These large-scale works include abstract paintings on paper and wood panel plus a series of figurative sculptures in bronze. The majority are not of this world landscapes that combine geometric and organic shapes with great alacrity, using unique patterns and textures to draw the viewer into an imaginary, surreal world of microcosmic dimensions. MARS-1"s distinctly individual style is constantly evolving and themes explored range from scientific to esoteric. Early inspirations include graffiti, animation, UFO-logy, extraterrestrials, mysteries of the universe, and the abstract quality of existence. He attended Academy of Art in San Francisco, where he currently lives and works, and is heavily active in the city s contemporary art scene.
