They said it couldn"t be done, but someone finally made an album just as head-slappingly wrong as King Uszniewicz & His Uszniewicztones" stunning debut LP Teenage Dance Party -- and of course, who else could have done it but King U and his partners in musical crime? Twistin" and Bowlin" isn"t quite as immediately startling as Teenage Dance Party, if only because once you"re aware such a phenomena exists, it"s difficult to be as perplexed by it. But that"s not to say Twistin" and Bowlin"s musical qualities are any less amazing than on the earlier album -- if anything, King Uszniewicz"s talents as a sax player seem to have actually receded since his earlier recordings, as evidenced by the reeds-in-agony showcase "Black Saxes," and while the rhythm section is marginally less sloppy on these sessions, it only makes the woozy gang vocals and off-center guitar lines sound all the more confounding (and boy, does Logjam Lurch Patterson torture that whammy bar on "Ruby"). Every bit as headache-inducing as a warm 12-pack of generic beer and capable of generating a lot more laughs, Twistin" and Bowlin" is a glorious celebration of the possibilities of creative ineptitude, and the most unusual entertainment concept to come out of a bowling alley since shoe rental. Listen and be stunned. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
