Description from the book flap: Nevada"s first printing press was hauled over the mountains from California in 1858 to produce the region"s earliest newspaper, the Territorial Enterprise. Printing requirement grew rapidly as the Comstock Lode attracted new residents and Nevada became a territory and shortly thereafter a full-fledged state. The newly formed government son found a need for printed documents to inform the widely scattered populace of its actions, so in 1865 it created the office of State Printer and appointed a Virginia City newspaperman as its first incumbent. Since printing was far less costly in California, the State Printer could often increase his profits by shipping work out of state. The practice was quite legal but was concealed from the public eye because California printers used Nevada imprints on many published pieces. Of the 1,254 items described in the bibliography, nearly all are annotated with details of their printing histories: who printed them, when, where, and at what cost. This bibliography describes books, pamlets, broadsides, state and territorial documents, fraternal and church publications, and a variety of other printed matter from 1858 through 1880. Sixteen of the items described in the book are illustrated.
