As is so often the case these days, Carlo Maria Giulini recorded this music several times, most recently with the Concertgebouw Orchestra on Sony. Those are deadly dull performances to be avoided at all costs. These, his first versions, are generally very fine, though he made better versions of the Eighth and Ninth Symphonies with the Chicago Symphony on DG (only the Ninth is currently available). Nevertheless, if you want this particular conductor in this music, you won"t be disappointed. --David Hurwitz
