Clann na Poblachta was a small, theoretically radical republican political party which challenged Fianna Fail for office, power, and the right to ownership of the symbols of national identity shortly after the Second World War. Controversy attended both the creation of the party and its sensational act of self-destruction. Despite the view of the Clann as a one-election party, their very existence generated enormous excitement at a time when Ireland’s political landscape seemed impervious to change. Without the Clann de Valera would not have lost office in 1948, and a new form of government - government by coalition - would not have been created. The party also provided two government ministers, their leader Sean McBride and Dr Noel Browne who between them were to make an impressive and innovatory contribution to government. Unfortunately, a spectacular public row between both men led to the collapse of the party, which was irrevocably damaged during the recriminations. This is an immensely enjoyable book which contains new research on a fascinating period in Irish politics and will be of interest to the general reader and researchers alike.
