And Peter confessed--" Thou hast the words of eternal life" (John vi. 68.) Yet again, Jesus said to the Father, " Thou hast given him power over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as Thou hast given Him" (John xvii. 2.) Until Christ speaks and calls, man remains dead. Lazarus was in his grave, but Christ stood and called him, and he that was dead came forth. Some laugh at any such thing as conversion. They fold their hands, and think there is no need for any anxiety or self-examination. They will walk into heaven leisurely, imagining all is well if their life is outwardly moral and respectable. But this is not enough. It is not sufficient for the drunkard to give up his besetting sin, or for the niggardly man to become charitable, since our Lord distinctly said, "Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven" (Matt, xviii. 3.) You need conversion; you want a mighty change to take place in your souls, a change, heart-deep and life-wide, which nothing but God"s grace can effect. Do you say, What must I do? Shall I begin to visit the poor, or teach in the Sunday School? First and foremost, before you can do any of these things acceptably to God, you need life yourself. Our life here is short. It has its morning, afternoon, then its evening, and the sun sets. "Man that is born of a woman, is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not" (Job xiv. 1, 2.) Oh! how different is the life which God gives, eternal as His own exi...
