This release presents all existing collaborations between Ray Charles and one of the most celebrated arrangers in jazz history, Quincy Jones, prior to 1961 (Charles wouldn"t make another recording with Jones until 1965). Charles" performances on Jones" various arrangements are particularly noteworthy, as is their magnificent interplay when Ray joins the Quincy Jones orchestra for the first half of the LP The Genius of Ray Charles. Also included here are most of Charles" collaborations with the also celebrated arranger Ralph Burns, with whom Jones wouldn"t work again until 1988. This set includes three complete original albums: Genius + Soul = Jazz (Impulse AS2), The Genius of Ray Charles (Atlantic LP1312), and The Genius Hits the Road (ABC-Paramount ABCS-335), as well as two interesting instrumental sessions arranged by Quincy Jones. Featured throughout these recordings are such important jazz soloists as Clark Terry, Thad Jones, Paul Gonsalves, Zoot Sims, Urbie Green, Bob Brookmeyer, Jimmy Cleveland, Budd Johnson, Frank Foster and Roy Haynes, among many others. The Genius Hits the Road features Charles with his most legendary regular band ever, including David "Fathead" Newman, Leroy "Hug" Cooper, and Bennie "Hank" Crawford.
