This research investigated technologies that reduce treatment costs and energy consumption for ZLD desalination. To evaluate this, projected treatment costs and energy requirements for the proposed ZLD approach were compared to a benchmark ZLD approach comprising primary RO, brine concentrator, and evaporation pond. Utilizing five test waters from, City of Phoenix groundwater, Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) surface water, City of Scottsdale, AZ reclaimed water, Beverly Hills, CA groundwater, and San Antonio Water Systems (SAWS) groundwater. Details and discussions show that the proposed ZLD process requires less energy because less flow is treated in the brine concentrator.
