A volume of 16 essays by colleagues, pupils and friends of Nigel Glendinning to mark his retirement as Professor of Spanish at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London. The volume aims to reflect his exceptional prestige and versatility as a specialist on both the literature and the visual arts of Spain in the 17th and 18th centuries. The essays cover a range of subjects particularly associated with Professor Glendinning: text and image in the Baroque, aspects of 18th-century literature, and the art of Goya. They include an edition, with commentary, of Calderon"s important "Deposicion" on the art of painting, and a presentation of two previously unknown drawings by Goya.
