African American Masters is one of four Smithsonian American Art Museum exhibitions traveling across the United States through 2004. The calendar includes selections from the collection of sixty-one paintings, sculptures, and photographs by artists such as Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, Hale Woodruff, and Purvis Young. These images reveal both universal concerns and a special awareness of "being Black" in the 20th century.
