Chanchona music is rooted in the rural life of the region of Oriente (East) of El Salvador. Chanchona, literally "big sow," takes its name from the size & shape of the stringed bass that anchors this ensemble"s music. While its sound of violins, guitars, percussion & bass is distinctive, musically, it has a lot in common with nearby Caribbean & Mexican popular dance musics. Rhythmic cumbias, lively canciones rancheras (country songs) slower, romantic boleros & homegrown lyrics form the core of the Chanchona"s repertoire.
