Marcus Junkelmann is a real experimenter. He has already tramped the Alpine passes in his research into the Roman footsoldier; now he is engaged in a study of Roman cavalry - and into the wider role of the horse in the Roman World. This book is only the beginning. In it he talks a little about his reconstructed equipment, his search for suitable horses (from the Camargue) but much more about the historical/archaeological evidence for horses - as draught and working animals, in the circus, for hunting, in Roman triumphal monuments, and as seen by the gods. More is surely to come for the cavalry unit is now trained, and shortly embarks on a march along the NW frontiers from the Danube to the Rhine, through Germany to the Netherlands, and then to England and Scotland next year (perhaps). This journey and the behaviour of horses, men and equipment will surely make another book.
