Arnold Schoenberg, composer of the celebrated monodrama Pierrot lunaire, wrote five sets of piano pieces that roughly correspond to various phases of his stylistic development. Despite moving from a tonal idiom to atonality and then to twelve-note writing, these works retain a remarkable stylistic unity. In performances of great finesse, pianist Florent Boffard showcases these fascinating pieces, written by a master composer whose works and theories exerted a profound influence on most of the 20th century.
