Listening now is an archaeological dig, uncovering bones in the shapes of palm-muted chugging guitars, howled and straining vocals, and breakdowns galore. Clocking in at just under 30 minutes, Give Up The Ghost touches on each trope of post-hardcore, even the morose and cryptic lyricism noted across the genre. On So Long, So Long Lee sings, My income won t let me live/I slave too hard for what they give./So what s the point in living anymore/when the water s right outdoor? Lyrics like that might be perfect for the insides of high school notebooks, scribbled in anger and stained with tears, but they can t stand up to a second listen. On the title track, the vocals take a sharp turn from melodic hardcore to guttural screams, the kind even a good cup of tea can t fix. But, as a whole, it works quite well as a sonic scrapbook, jigging loose memories in three-minute clips. If that is what you re looking for memory lane revisited this is what you need.
