Part 1 discusses the importance of infection in mortality and morbidity of elderly persons, and presents lifestyle factors that contribute to infection in this population. It describes changes in body defenses that place the elderly at risk. It discusses two illnesses, shingles and tuberculosis that are particularly common in elderly individuals with immune senescence. It discusses also the decreased inflammatory response seen in some elders.
