Priory Records"s continuing series, eventually reaching 20 volumes, is a unique and welcome exploration of music written for the Anglican Evensong service--specifically the sections known as the Song of Mary and the Song of Simeon. The Portsmouth Cathedral singers make a noble and glorious sound, performing settings by Howells, Victoria, Lassus, Stanford, Weelkes, Darke, and Bairstow--and a surprisingly beautiful setting by 20th-century composer Herbert Andrewes. --David Vernier
