In the 1940s, Ray Campi moved from N.Y. to Austin, Texas, and grew up with an enduring love of Texas beer joint music. Chief among his heroes was Jesse James, a transplanted Mississippian who led a western swing dance band. In a time when music was far more regionalized than it is now, Jesse James was a local legend, playing to packed houses wherever he went. He made a few recordings for Blue Bonnet and 4-Star, but none of those capture the excitement of his live shows - an excitement that Ray Campi does his best to re-create here.
