Edwin Lutyens (Architectural Monographs No 6)
This Architectural Monograph is devoted to publishing a selection of the country houses, both built and projected, which provided a mainstay of Lutyens" architectural work throughout his career. It is illustrated not only with the classic black and white photographs commissioned by Country Life magazine shortly after the completion of the buildings but also a number of more recent colour photographs. Included for the first time in this second revised edition is a series of colour gatefolds by the distinguished architectural photographer Andre Goulancourt. In addition, the plans of the houses have been carefully redrawn to show the remarkable way in which house relates to garden, taking into account the contingencies of plan, site and orientation. An essay by Peter Inskip offers a series of interpretations of Lutyens" houses and clearly demonstrates the threads of his work as rooted in architectural concerns more conceptual than the eclectic styling for which he has been recently applauded.
